   When designing our guest book, we focused on what's most important: it has to be beautiful; it has to lay flat for ease of writing; structurally it must be sound; and it needs to last and be stored for safe keeping.

  First: Beautiful. One of the most beautiful and feminine structures is a coptic-stitched book made with thick paper. A coptic-stitched book is made up of two hard covers which are linked by exposed stitches that run along the spine of the book. This structure is called a ‘coptic book’ because the stitching mimics the bindings of the Coptic monks of Egypt (4th to 11th c.).

   The coptic-stitched book is one of the few structures that will lay flat when opened.

   A coptic-stitched book is very, very sturdy. The standard size we offer is 10" tall by 8" wide (closed book dimensions). We make our guest books with six stitches running up the spine which makes the 'hinge' very durable. By hinge, we just mean the movement of opening and closing the book.

    As far as storage is concerned, we offer a custom clamshell box. A clamshell box is made up of two boxes which nest together when closed. That keeps light and dust out. We make the clamshell box with the same cloth and paper that make up your guest book.

   Your book cloth color choices include: Black, Copper, Dark Blue, Golden Yellow, Lavender, Metallic Gold, Metallic Silvery-Blue, Mint, Sage, and, Teal. If you would like to customize the color of the book cloth based on your wedding colors and it isn't one we stock, there is an additional $40 charge.

   The guest book is made with a floral recess on the cover and if purchasing a clamshell box (see below), the recess on the cover of the clamshell would match. We collect, dry then "laminate" flower blossoms between two sheets of handmade abaca paper throughout the year so we have a lovely selection to choose from. This is done by hand and each recess is treated like a little piece of art. To view the cover of a guest book with recess, click here.

   A custom clamshell may be purchased for an album or special book you already have. The price starts at $225 for a small book (if using in-stock materials), however the size of the existing album or book determines the final cost of the clamshell. With an existing album or book, it is best if it is sent to us for custom fitting. If that isn't possible, we can email you a measuring guide.

   Our clamshells enjoyed a brush with fame in 2001. We did some repair work to actress Susan Sarandon's very special, and very personal photo album containing photos and keepsakes from one of her birthday celebrations. For that album, we made a custom, coordinating clamshell box. So happy was she with our work, she sent us her daughter's Sweet 16 album to have a custom clamshell box made. The clamshell we created (pictured at left) had a hand painted cover panel which Marie-Celeste, DHP's owner, painted to match the existing album's front.
