A fundraising campaign is underway!
Everyone really should have their own stationery - at least some personalized notecards, so our fundraising campaign is using personal stationery as a Premium for your support - we firmly believe that help comes to those that help themselves!

A Brief History

Marie-Céleste Edwards (DHP's owner, pictured at left), a graduate from the Ontario College of Art, originally began Western-style hand papermaking to print her lino and woodcuts on. While experimenting, plant fibers were added to the papermaking vat and the paper itself was so beautiful that it had to be on display. Binding with her paper began and her first sale of handbound fotoboxes in 1997 gave birth to DHP.

For almost two years, Marie-Céleste just made plant fiber papers, bound books and boxes, mainly for individuals and a few stores. She explored making different products, offering gift items at holiday sales.

DHP began offering unpaid internships in 1999, then in the spring of 2001, Marie-Céleste hired Andi (left) as the first paid bindery production assistant. Andi began with DHP two years previously as a part-time intern while on breaks from college. In the fall of 2001 Penny (right) joined the team, also as a bindery production assistant. With the move to Poughkeepsie in June 2004 and with downscaling the studio, Andi and Penny are not with DHP as regular employees anymore, but everyone stays in touch and they are still "on call" if help is needed. Penny affectionately refers to DHP as "a one-woman shop with help".

More changes came in the Fall of 2007. Marie-Céleste made the decision in September 2007 that she was going to remove herself as a commercial printer and papermaker effective immediately. Working traditionally with the bridal industry, September marked the end of the 2007 bridal season. Deciding in September that she wasn't going to work on invitations come January allowed her to start sorting the studio immediately and to focus on the direction she was going to take.

The direction came - back to her first love, printmaking. When she made the decision to go back to her roots, her first print off the press was a personal reminder to be grateful.

The papermaking studio was shut down and the print shop SUPER simplified. The bindery was also downsized. All this resulted in her recapturing her house. The house is actually being used as a house for the most part rather than 75% of it being devoted to DHP!
